“Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. (Luke 17:28-30)
A nation is a reflection of its leadership. As we’ve talked about in the series just concluded, GOD’S MESSAGE TO AMERICA, a country’s leaders speak the official position of a nation. And God holds that nation responsible for those official policies. In the case of ancient Israel – and contemporary America – Rabbi Cahn has made the convincing case that both were / are being judged for the sin of arrogance and pride; setting aside God’s laws in favor of their own. For that there is a judgment to pay. Christ Himself testified to that fact.
Background
This past week may have seen somewhat of a sea-change for the United States. It began early in May when Vice President Joe Biden bluntly signaled his support for gay marriage. Citing the authoritative teaching found in the TV show Will and Grace, which he said “did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody's ever done so far”, Mr Biden announced his approval. “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don't see much of a distinction.” [i] [Men marrying men; women marrying women; as opposed to men marrying women: I can see how Joe got confused.]
That announcement is what actually led to the much more significant action; President Obama’s endorsement of homosexual unions. Referencing the advice of friends and family and the example of same-sex couples on his staff in “committed, monogamous relationships,” the President took the plunge. His statement was historic in nature. It was the first time that the Chief Executive of this Nation gave approval to such a radical departure from normative Judeo-Christian morality. Mr Obama told ABC News, “when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that 'don’t ask don’t tell' is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” [ii]
